Recovery and Function of Granulocytes Stored in Plasma at 4 C for One Week.

Granulocytes isolated from fresh blood and stored in autologous plasma at 4 C remained in suspension longer than did granulocytes stored in a balanced salt solution. Acid-citrate-dextrose plasma was more effective in maintaining the granulocytes in suspension than was heparin. The function of granulocytes stored at 4 C in acid-citrate-dextrose plasma declined markedly with storage for one week. During the first 24 hours of storage there was only a minimal loss of function. These observations suggest that granulocyte suspensions may be useful for therapeutic transfusion for up to 24 hours of storage in acid-citrate-dextrose plasma. (Author)
