THREE-INCH VERTICAL TAPE ALTIMETER AND AIRSPEED-MACH INDICATOR EVALUATION

The Research and Development Division of the USAF Instrument Flight Center conducted a pilot factors evaluation of a three-inch altimeter and a three-inch tape airspeed-mach indicator to determine the utility/suitability of the displays. Approximately 35 hours were flown by nine subject pilots using a T-39 as the test bed for evaluating the displays. From the responses to these questionnaires, it was deemed inadvisable to adopt the altimeter as a primary flight instrument because misinterpretation of altitude remains a problem. However, the tape airspeed-mach indicator was found acceptable as a primary flight instrument.
