A COMPARISON OF RAKE-MEASURED SCATTERING LAYER SIGNATURES WITH RADIOSONDE DATA

RAKE soundings for ten days have been compared with meteorological soundings of the refractive index structure determined from radiosonde ascents near the common volume. Comparison of profiles of the refractive index structure function coefficient (C sup 2, sub n) with the received signal zero-Doppler power profile indicated more power was often received at certain heights than was predicted by (C sup 2, sub n). Layer angular dependence estimates at these heights made from the layers parabolic signatures in the scattering function showed evidence of anisotropy in the refractivity structure. It is shown by an anisotropic turbulence model that the anisotropy can account for the enhanced signal levels.
