The probabilities of correct decision and false alarm for a fading signal in M alternative locations with D-fold diversity are derived and numerically evaluated over the range of values M = 1, 2, 4, 16, 64, 256, 1024and D = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64for a wide range of signal-energy-to-noise-density-level ratios (ENR). These results which apply to the optimum receiver processor,have relevance to synchronization as well as to multiple alternative communication with thresholding. It is found that the optimum order of diversity does not correspond to the familiar 5dB ENR per branch,but rather to ENR branch values as large as 14dB for some cases of small false-alarm probability and moderate correct-decision probability.
