Expendable Battery Packs for Buoys,

The use of a lightweight,dry cell,expendable battery pack for use in lighted buoys was visualized for emergency,wartime conditions in forward areas. Such a battery pack would replace the more cumbersome and inefficient storage battery pack. A suitable specification was drawn up to cover this pack,and test packs were procedured from two sources. Through laboratory and field tests,these expendable dry cell packs were shown to possess most of the desired characteristics for emergency use. Neither make of pack was found to be economically superior to the other,although the Bright Star Battery Company pack was larger and hence provided a longer unattended service life. However,the cost and voltage characteristics were such as to prevent the use of these packs under normal conditions. (Author)
