Large Area Plasma Display Module.

The report describes the design,construction,and successful operation of a plasma display module having 256by 1024randomly addressable elements with a resolution of 33lines per inch. The capacitively coupled display elements are neon orange with a peak light intensity of about 60foot-lamberts and a contrast ratio of about 20to 1. The module can be stacked on its long axis with other modules to form larger display panels. The discontinuity of the display matrix between modules can be made as small as 0.030inch. Complete drive electronics were fabricated for one display module. It is organized so that any one of the quarter million elements can be randomly selected and written or erased. The write cycle time is 355microseconds and the erase cycle time is 230microseconds. The update time for writing 10percent of the display module is 9.5seconds. The sustain driver for the panel is capable of lighting up to 50percent of the panel without significant loss of operating margin. (Modified author abstract)
