Synthetic Resins and Activated Carbon for Wastewater Treatment.

Previous research reports on water and wastewater treatment systems for the U.S. Air Force have shown the applicability of the adsorption process. In this report major emphasis is placed on the use of synthetic resins as adsorbents and on their performance relative to activated carbon. A review of the literature relative to the use of resins has shown that many different types of resins are available,and that the choice of one for a particular application depends greatly on the compounds to be adsorbed. For waters containing high concentrations of detergents,or waters containing a heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds,such as domestic wastewater or effluent from a secondary biological plant treating domestic sewage,the weak base resin seems to function best. Experimental research verified this conclusion;however,the adsorption capacity of the resin and the number of species which could be adsorbed by the resins generally appeared to be less than that for activated carbon.
