Development of a Rapid Specific Free Available Chlorine Test with Syringaldazine (FACTS).

Modifications to three test procedures for the determination of free available chlorine (FAC) have been attempted and/or evaluated. The three test procedures,selected as the result of previous studies,were the N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD),the stabilized neutral orthotolidine (SNORT) procedure,and the syringaldazine (liquid) procedure. The syringaldazine (liquid) procedure was modified to produce a test (FACTS) which is accurate,precise and specific in the determination of FAC. This study showed that the FACTS procedure is not subject to interference from any of the common interferences in other FAC methods;is accurate and precise for determination of FAC;can be developed as a field test kit;and can be employed to determine combined available chlorine.
