摘要

The final-stage sintering behavior or densification of MgAl2O4has been studied as a function of stoichiometry in an attempt to inhibit grain growth by solute segregation to the grain boundaries and to allow spinel to sinter to theoretical density. It was found that the grain growth could be inhibited by deviations from stoichiometry,and that grain growth inhibition increased as the spinel composition approached the solid solubility limit in MgO-rich spinel. Changes in stoichiometry do not provide sufficient grain growth inhibition to prevent the occurrence of discontinuous grain growth. However,spinel can be sintered to theoretical density by a second-phase mechanism in which the second phase is MgO. The presence of the second phase in the spinel causes light scattering and results in a translucent material. (Modified author abstract)
