Comparative Efficiencies of Numerical Techniques in the Solution of Acoustic Wave Problems: A Computer Experiment.

Comparisons are made between classical numerical techniques,or algorithms,and a newly developed technique,which is tailored to the solution of acoustic wave problems in layered structures. Results of extensive computer experimentation show that the presently advanced technique is more efficient than the existing techniques that may be applied in the presence of arbitrary profiles. Reductions in solution times roughly proportional to the matrix size, N,when compared to the Gauss elimination technique,and twice the iteration number when compared to the Gauss-Seidel technique are observed. In addition,the present technique reduces the storage requirements by nearly one half and increases the numerical by a factor of two. In many at-sea explorations and missions,real-time acoustic predictions are essential for in-situ decision making. Being highly efficient,this new technique should be particularly desirable.
