Naval Missile Center Photo Data Analysis of Store-Separation Films.

The Naval Missile Center has developed a novel method of store-separation analysis which uses the PDAS (photo data analysis system) and an IBM-7094computer. It has greater speed and accuracy than the older conventional method. The PDAS involves superposition of two images,flight-test movie image of the separating store and an image of a scale model of the store,by video mixing. At superposition,the positional relationship of the store to its camera is proportional to that of the model and its camera. Lens distortion is bypassed because the flight-test camera lens is used on the model-viewing video camera. A six-degree-of-freedom,operator-controlled positioner orients the model in the field of view of its camera. High accuracy in position data extracted from the test is possible because many raster points are used in image superposition while the conventional system uses only a cross-hair intersection point.
