Electromagnetic Fields Produced by Turbulence in Charged Fluids.

The report presents the results of an investigation of the electromagnetic fields produced by an inhomogeneously charged,turbulent fluid. During the program the intensities and spectra of a free subsonic air jet seeded with charged water droplets were investigated. The measurements were correlated with an existing theoretical model of a charged turbulent region with a fluctuating boundary. The simplified mathematical model showed agreement with the measurements within an order of magnitude. During the experimental program a charge-seeding generator with a charge density of approximately 8/100,000coulombs per cubic meter created the free air jet. The electric field fluctuations were measured with a field probe with a fiber-optic data link. The time-varying field was in the order of several hundred volts per meter rms in a frequency spectrum from 4Hz to 5KHz at a distance of 1meter downstream from the nozzle. An attempt to scale the obtained results to a seeded aircraft wake vortex indicates that a detection range of up to 100meters is feasible,but further experiments are necessary to confirm this estimate.
