The purpose of this investigation was to develop manufacturing methods for the ballistically tolerant tubular/sandwich CH-47forward bellcrank with the goals of optimizing production costs and weight,while achieving structural repeatability. Complete fabrication details are presented. Ballistic,fatigue,and static tests,conducted at -65F, 75F,and 180F,showed that the bellcrank met the design requirements. The manufacturing techniques developed resulted in both substantial weight savings (1.65pounds compared to 3.4pounds for a metal bellcrank) and cost savings ($68.60compared to $135.00). A slotting technique that localized the ballistic damage on the exit face sheet and prevented gross delaminations was developed. (Author)
