摘要

The hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of clean surfaces of copper and silver were investigated. Contact angles of oxygen-free water on clean,oxygen-free copper and silver surfaces were measured and found to be zero degrees. The introduction of very small amounts of organic contaminants to these surfaces,however, sufficed to make them hydrophobic. The results indicated that both the hydrophilicity of oxide-free metal surfaces and their especially strong affinity for hydrophobic low energy organic absorbates,are general characteristics of the metals of Group 1-b,and possibly of all metals. The latter characteristic hold promise for producing a variety of surfaces useful for applications involving reduced fluid-solid surface interaction. (Modified author abstract)
