Species of Flies Breeding in Latrines in Taipei Area.

Maggots breeding in latrine vaults from 14 administrative districts of the Taipei area were sampled on four occasions between july 1970 and April 1971. Rearing of the maggots to adults for identification revealed 15 species of dipterous flies belonging to 8 familes, and 1 species of a parasitic hymenopteran. Throughout the warmer months of summer and autumn in 1970 and spring of the following year, the common green-bottle fly, Chrysomya megacephala (32.5-77%) and the flesh fly, Boettcherisca peregrina (19.5-35.4%) were found in greater numbers than the other species. The relation of these flies to human health is briefly reviewed and discussed. The occurrence of Hermetia illucens, Telmatoscopus albipunctatus and Psychoda harrisi in Taiwan is recorded for the first time. The flies collected are illustrated by photographs. (Author)
