Similarity theory methods are used to set up the equation of the balance of mechanical and thermal energy per unit time in the cutting of metals. Steps are outlined for finding the optimal cutting temperature without measuring tool wear, as well as for finding the lowest relative surface wear and the optimal surface roughness. (Author)
