Spherical Averaging in a Diffuse Sound Field.

In earlier work, the effectiveness of continuous averaging over a surface in a diffuse sound field was compared with that of averaging the field values at discrete points. Here the comparison is extended to the case of continuous averaging over the surface and volume of a sphere. Formulas for the variance are obtained which show that the oversampling of correlated values increases the variance and yields a poorer average.
