A New Cooling Method for Metal Cutting Tools.

The report is a follow-on of Phase I and presents the improvements made on the tool,and test results under a variety of cutting conditions. The improvements tested included the following:An integrated wick-shim design, a positive coolant feed,thin inserts,copper-plated inserts,metal-sheathed coolant tubing,improved flow valve,and improved coolant properties. The results indicated that most of the innovations were effective and practical. The testing results showed that the internally-cooled tool could be operated vertically as well as horizontally,and it could be used successfully on a wide variety of materials. An economic analysis of the cutting test results demonstrates that considerable financial savings can be obtained by using the internal cooling method. Also the effects on the environment are not detrimental;that is,no air pollution,water pollution,noise problems,or other environmental problems have been encountered. This is considered to be an improvement over conventional cooling methods of flood or mist cooling. (Author)
