The program determined the effect of several Ti-3Al-2.5V hydraulic tubing manufacturing techniques and common tubing defects on rotary flexure fatigue life of the tubing. Test results showed cold worked and stress relieved 105ksi minimum tensile yield strength tubing and annealed 70ksi minimum tensile yield strength tubing have approximately the same fatigue life. It was shown that belt sanding the tubing outer surface and then pickling both the inside and outside surfaces was the best surface preparation method evaluated. Grit blasting of the tubing inner surface or glass bead peening of the tubing outer surface offered no improvement in fatigue life and in some cases actually reduced fatigue life. The balance of the program was devoted to determining the effect of tubing imperfections. (Modified author abstract)
