摘要

An extensive empirical and analytical investigation of the contamination accumulated by aircraft flying through nuclear debris clouds indicates that, for most operational circumstances, the contamination does not interfere with on-board nucleonic instrumentation. The empirical approach has consisted of measurement and data processing phases. Basic radiation intensity measurements were made on ten aircraft which had penetrated debris clouds produced by French nuclear test detonations in 1970and 1971. In general, a repeatable correlation between contamination levels and aircraft locations was observed. The analytical approach has consisted of the formulation of a particle attachment model and the integration of this attachment model and an aircraft fly-through model with an existing water-surface-burst debris cloud model to predict gross contamination intensity.
