With the advent of the V/STOL aircraft and its application in the attack role, it has become obvious that a traditional ejection seat will not fulfill all the escape requirements peculiar to this type of aircraft. In an effort to overcome this difficulty, the concept of vertical seeking is offered. The basic philosophy here is to rotate the seat/man configuration into a vertical position as soon as the cockpit is cleared and then thrust it upward in a stabilized trajectory to an altitude that will permit safe recovery. The effort to date has been a limited parametric computer study aimed at obtaining baseline design data investigations into the physiological stress that will be imposed on the crewman. The main topic of the paper is the discussion of acceleration and load definition and then the influence of various operational parameters on them.
