摘要

The results of studies on the fracture behavior of metal matrix composite materials are summarized. These studies were conducted on both eutectic and 'bundle-and-draw'metal matrix composites. In the latter type of composite, two types of fracture mode were observed:in 'instantaneous'fracture, composite failure is concurrent with the failure of the first fiber;in 'stepwise'fracture, additional composite elongation after the first fiber break was necessary to induce composite fracture. The eutectic composite (Al-Al3Ni) studied failed generally by a statistical accumulation of fiber fractures. Analysis of fiber fracture prior to composite failure allowed a more accurate partitioning of stress between fiber and matrix as well as determination of insitu fiber ineffective lengths and distributive in breaking strengths.
