Development of a Standard for Air Force Structural Firefighting Pumpers.

In managing the acquisition of replacement structural firefighting pumpers, a basic step is deciding what to buy. In the case of pumpers,there appeared to be no standard for what firefighting capabilities new pumpers should have. These capabilities are the specific design features of the pumper to optimize its use in actual fire fighting. To that end, a random survey of fifty Air Force fire chiefs,or their assistants,was conducted. Each response to the survey represented the opinion of one fire chief on what should constitute a standard for Air Force pumpers,were he called upon the establish that standard. The collective responses,taken as representative of all Air Force fire chiefs,were the compiled into a sample standard of desired design options,if costs were not a factor. The resulting standard was not to represent a real operating pumper,but rather a management tool to be used in deciding what pumper options should be included in future acquisitions.
