FAA JT3D Quiet Nacelle Retrofit Feasibility Program,Volume IV. Compatibility Analysis and Design Study for DC-8Aircraft.

Task 1of this study consisted of a design study of the possible application of the Boeing JT3D quiet nacelle to the current DC-8short duct and long duct domestic aircraft fleet as exemplified by the DC-8-61and DC-8-63aircraft. The Task 1study identified many physical and functional problems associated with the use of the Boeing quiet nacelle on DC-8aircraft. Of the configurations studied,two configurations for the DC-8-61and two configurations for the DC-8-63were selected for cost evaluation. The configurations selected for each of the two DC-8models were identified as Family I and Family II. During the conduct of the Task 1study,it appeared that Douglas discrete nacelles should also be studied to determine the most advantageous approach from an overall cost standpoint.
