Cellular and Humoral Immunity in Parasitic Infections.

The immune response to a representative intracellular animal parasite, toxoplasma gondii was investigated. Phagocytosis, humoral antibody response, as well as immediate and delayed hypersensitivity were investigated. The results indicate a reciprosal relationship between circulating sensitized lymphocytes and the quantity of humoral antibody; the inhibition of toxoplasma growth in vitro by macrophages from infected guinea pigs; and the release of isotope from mouse mastocytes coated with purified toxoplasma antigen by lymphocytes from infected guinea pigs.
