Dental Floss for Implantation and Sampling of 'Streptococcus mutans' from Approximal Surfaces of Human Teeth.

A streptomycin-resistant Streptococcus mutans strain was implanted in four posterior approximal sites in each of two human volunteers with waxed dental floss. In plaque samples obtained during a 4-month and a 9.5 month study period, the organism was recovered from the eight sites of implantation in 65 to 96 samples and from only 31 of 307 samples from 31 non-implanted sites. Recovery of the implanted organism was limited to the immediate area of implantation and there was very little transfer to distant tooth surfaces. (Author)
