Refrigerated Direct Insertion Probe for Mass Spectrometry.

The direct introduction of samples into mass spectrometers is commonly accomplished by means of a probe rod that carries a sample capillary through a vacuum lock into the source region. This is satisfactory for samples of moderate or low volatility, but low boiling substances or the most volatile components of mixtures are lost during sample introduction, before spectra can be acquired. These losses are particularly severe if the source is heated, especially in the chemical ionization mode because of the rapid heat transfer from the source to the capillary at the high reagent gas pressure. A refrigerated probe can reduce or eliminate these evaporation losses.
