Encoding and Decoding of Connected Discourse during Altered States of Consciousness.

Encoding and decoding of connected discourse was examined under differing conditions of syntax and semantic constraints and with 44 subjects breathing different gases (air or nitroux oxide). Subjects were experienced corpsmen at a naval hospital working in anesthesiology. After breathing the selected gas for 10 minutes and asked to repeat recorded stimulus material, an analysis of variance for repeated measures revealed that the complexity of the verbal task, the goodness of the grammatical and semantic quality, and the breathing medium all affected the ability to decode and subsequently encode verbal messages.
