Scotts Creek Project, Newberry County, South Carolina, Statement of Findings

Description of Action: Initiate construction, on receipt of funds, of a flood control project consisting of clearing and snagging in North Fork Scotts Creek, from S.C. Highway 34 to S.C. Highway 34 By-pass, a distance of 1,630 feet and enlargement from this point to a point approximately 2.27 miles further upstream. The bottom widths of the enlarged channel segment will range from 20 to 28 feet except in the vicinity of the railroad trestles where a bottom width of 50 feet has been recommended for a short reach to compensate for a change in design grade where deepening is not practical. Two bridges will be replaced and the openings under other bridges will be cleaned out and enlarged. Environmental Impacts: Containment of flood flows within banks and the prevention of flood damages, alteration of flow regiment of Scotts Creek and Bush River, increase of water turbidity and sedimentation of project channels and Bush River, increase in dust and noise levels during actual construction activities, and traffic congestion during construction of new bridges or repair on existing bridges.
