Integrated Surface Acoustic Wave Convolver/Amplifier.

A number of surface acoustic wave convolvers with bidirectional amplification were constructed. These devices use YZ LiNbO3 for the piezoelectric substrate with a semiconducting film overlay of CdSe. Input frequencies of 123 MHz and 132 MHz are used with a convolution output frequency of 255 MHz. The interaction region of all constructed devices has been 5 microseconds. A convolution efficiency of -12 dBm has been obtained. The bias voltage for the surface wave amplification ranges from 30 to 70 V and may be applied dc (100% duty cycle). A new set of masks has been designed which should significantly reduce spurious output signals due to reflection of the surface waves. The time duration of this convolver is 10 microseconds. The new designs feature unidirectional input transducers, unidirectional surface wave amplifiers, and split convolution regions for suppression of surface wave echoes.
