Distribution of 'Streptococcus mutans' Biotypes in Five Human Populations.

Dental plaque samples were obtained for U.S. naval recruits in Orlando, Florida, San Diego, California and Great Lakes, Illinois, as well as from Saudi Arabian naval personnel and Hawaiian school children. The distributions of Streptococcus mutans biotypes in these five populations were determined. Geographic differences were most apparent when the Saudi Arabian sample was compared to the other four groups. Single and multiple biotypes were observed in each group, however, multiple biotypes occurred most frequently in the Saudi Arabian group. Biotypes a and b were rarely observed; c was the most common in each of the populations; and d and e were more prevalent in the Saudi Arabians than in the other groups. These data contribute further knowledge on the worldwide distribution of S. mutans biotypes. This may be important in determining the proper biotype to incorporate into a caries vaccine for use in a specific geographic area. (Author)
