In recent years a general theory of hyperbolic mixed problems for first-order systems was developed. Unfortunately, the hypotheses required by this theory have been too restrictive to include important physical cases such as Maxwell's equations, the linearized shallow water equations, and the linearized equations of magnetohydrodynamics.
