Determination of Methaqualone in Urine by Metabolite Detection via Gas Chromatography.

A method is described that shows that gas chromatographic techniques can be usefully applied to the quantification of methaqualone and its principal metabolites. Gas chromatographic data is supported and substantiated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The distinctive metabolite pattern of the gas chromatogram produced by the relative differences in concentration appears to have some significant, perhaps, in relation to dose and time between ingestion and specimen collection. These techniques were also found to be of great value in studying the complex nature of the minor metabolites that contribute to the overall metabolic pattern of excretion of methaqualone. The pattern is certainly important for identification purposes by gas chromatoggraphy, especially when low levels of methaqualone cannot be distinguished from interferences of normal urinary constituents.
