Development of a Critical Incident-Based Measurement of Leadership Power.

The report describes in detail the initial steps in the development of a new research instrument to study leadership processes. It describes a semi-structured method used to elicit a large number of leadership incidents including accounts of problems encountered, important contextual information, leader actions, and incident outcomes. The method of evaluating and revising this raw information and the format and use of the new research instrument is described. A summary of incidents is provided which classifies parts of the incident into type of problem and mode of interpersonal influence expressed in the leader's action. Specific examples of leadership incidents are illustrated.
