Exogenously administered monoamines may elicit variable thermoregulatory responses dependent upon dosage, species, site of administration ambient temperature, etc. Intraventricular administration of serotonin and norepinephrine in rats evoked acute dose dependent hypothermic responses which were gradually superseded by significant hyperthermia. Administration of chlorimipramine or imipramine, even in monoamine depleted animals, also caused persistent hyperthermic responses, presumably by the prevention of reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine at nerve terminals involved in thermoregulation. Pretreatment with the serotonin inhibitory compound, cyproheptadine, attenuated the degree of hyperthermia achieved by central administration of chlorimipramine alone.
