Multiple Leukocytic Factors that Induce Reactions Characteristic of the Inflammatory Response.

It is well documented that phagocytic cells of the body initiate of a hormone-like signal mechanism that induces numerous biochemical alterations characteristic of the inflammatory response. Generation of the signal mechanism requires stimulation of the cells either in vivo or in vitro by various agents which include microorganisms, toxins, or phlogistic compounds. The signal consists of endogenous mediator substance(s) that effects alterations in plasma levels of trace metals, acute-phase globulins, pancreatic hormones, hepatic uptake of amino acids, and body temperature. Many of these alterations which occur in man during infectious illness also can be elicited in the experimental rat model by administration of substances elaborated from stimulated rabbit polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN).
