A Study of Characteristics in the Supervision of Scientific and Engineering Personnel.

This thesis seeks to better understand the particular nature in the supervision of scientific and engineering personnel. The face-to-face interview of 113 scientists and engineers and 98 non-technical personnel was the primary data collection method. Nine characteristics distinctive to the supervision of scientists and engineers were identified by comparing the views of scientists/engineers and non-technical personnel toward supervision. The major differences between the views of supervisors were in the greater significance attached to characteristics dealing with 'Human Relations' by scientific/engineering supervisors, and the greater significance attached to characteristics dealing with the 'Qualities of the Supervisor' by non-technical supervisors. The major differences in the views of operatives were in the greater significance attached to characteristics dealing with the 'Qualities of the Supervisor' by non-technical operatives, and the greater significance attached to treatment of subordinates as individuals and freedom to set goals by scientific/engineering operatives.
