Infrared and Raman spectroscopy were successfully employed for the qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of GB residues in exudates from munitions and of GB-demil dried salts (both spray-and drum-dried). Infrared and Raman spectra were determined and band assignments made for authentic samples of sodium isopropyl methylphosphonate (NaIMP),disodium methylphosphonate (Na2MP),and bis(sodium isopropyl methylphosphonic) anhydride (Na2Pyro). The presence of NaIMP, Na2MP,and Na2CO3in the dried salts can be definitely established by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. No Na2Pyro was detected in any of the spray-dried salts analyzed. The Na2Pyro salt has a detection limit of about 15microgram/mg of sample or approximately 1.5%. The infrared spectra were also used to support the chemical analysis results for the dried salts both qualitatively and semiquantitatively. Infrared was also used to characterize GB residues as exudates from outdated munitions. These exudates were shown to be composed of varying amounts of GB,GB acid,and salt(s) of GB acid,and,in some cases small amounts of DIMP. For the first time,the presence of TNT and RDX was definitely established in the exudates. Infrared spectra and band assignments were also determined for GB,difluoro,fluoro acid, DIMP,and the iron(III) salt of GB acid.
