Evaluation of IBM Vehicle Scheduling Program for Air Force Base Refuse-Collection Scheduling.

The IBM Vehicle Scheduling Program (VSP) was used to schedule refuse collection at five Air Force bases. The application procedure and the results are presented for two of these bases. The results indicate that computer scheduling of refuse collection can reduce manpower, distance traveled, and the number of vehicles required by up to 20 percent. Difficulties involved in using the IBM program and in producing the final route maps and schedule indicate that a computer program that would determine the traversal path and draw the route should be written (or obtained if one exists).
