Erection Procedure for Glued-Laminated Timber Bridge Decks with Dowel Connectors.

Timber bridges are widely used in rural areas and on Forest Service roads. They are durable, economically attractive, and can be erected with a minimum of skilled labor and equipment. The newly developed glued-laminated bridge deck provides excellent structural performance, and promises to extend the service life of the bridge by protecting the superstructure. Unfortunately, few crews have had experience in erecting bridges with this system, and often common mistakes are made that can cause difficulties. Through the experience gained on eight different bridge jobs, an efficient, workable erection procedure has been developed. The erection sequence and procedures are presented in this Research Paper, and suggestions made to avoid common pitfalls. These guidelines should help an erection crew build a timber bridge with minimal difficulty. (Author)
