A Correlation Study Relating Spacecraft Anomalies to Environmental Data.

An environmental data program was initiated so that the operational environment for geosynchronous orbiting DSCS satellites could be specified at times of satellite anomalies. The anomalies studied included uncommanded logic reset anomalies, spinup anomalies, and power converter switching anomalies. Magnetospheric substorm activity is associated with 90% of the logic reset anomalies, with all nine of the converter switching anomalies, and with two out of three of the spinup anomalies. Magnetospheric substorms, however, occur far more frequently than anomalies occur. Although this study suggests that the environment could be a factor in producing the anomalies, a conclusive argument for or against the environment acting on the DSCS satellite has not been made, mainly because of a lack of in situ environmental measurements.
