Sediment Production by Shallow-Water, Benthic Foraminifera at Selected Sites on Oahu, Hawaii.

Living, benthic foraminiferal standing crops were sampled at 0 to 10-m depths at selected sites on Oahu, Hawaii. About 40% of the foraminiferal community consisted of members of the genus Amphistegina. Sediment production by the mean standing crop of 170,000/sq m foraminifera was estimated as 0.3 kg CaCO3/sq m/yr, with Amphistegina producing about 90% of the total. Yearly foraminiferal production was estimated as 500,000 kg CaCO3 for 0 to 10-m depths of Oahu, approximately 0.2% of the coastal and nearshore reservoir of the island. Residence time of all sand in the reservoir is about 100 years. (Author)
