摘要

Results from this study show that the vestibular system is synergistic and the loss of one labyrinth leads to a permanent impairment in slow-phase output which can be reliably detected with low-frequency harmonic stimulation. Ewald's original discovery of asymmetry with ampullopetal vs ampullofugal displacement in the pigeon is also true for the monkey. The ratio is close to those values which Gernandt found for single-cell firing in the vestibular nuclei of the cat in response to angular acceleration. However, emphasis should be placed on the fact that the present data are based on the final output-eye movements. This information indicates that total slow-phase output is an almost direct reflection of cupular hair cell or vestibular nuclei activation and is asymmetrical for an individual canal system.
