Partial Elimination of Streptococcus mutans From Selected Tooth Surfaces After Restoration of Carious Lesions and SnF2 Prophylaxis.

Streptococcus mutans was isolated from carious and noncarious tooth surfaces before routine dental treatment was given to five men. After all carious lesions were restored, the prevalence of S. mutans was significantly reduced. An additional reduction of S. mutans was achieved following a conventional stannous fluoride prophylaxis; however, in no subject was the organism completely eliminated. The restorations of lesions and stannous fluoride prophylaxis treatments were effective but incomplete measures for eliminating S. mutans from tooth surfaces. (Author)
