Selection and Evaluation of Pleasure Boat Capacity Plate Designs.

Four studies were undertaken to deal with several aspects of the boat capacity labeling question. The first study determined boaters' awareness of capacity information on their own boats. It was recommended that designs used for present capacity plate labels be revised. The second study explored boaters' reactions to nine capacity plate designs on dimensions of attractiveness, simplicity, authenticity, and general preferability. In the third study, selected designs were tested for comprehension using tachistoscopic displays and a 'match to sample' procedure. The results indicated further testing of one design, modifications for another design, and the discarding of a pictorialized design. The fourth study was an evaluation of the effectiveness of designs in an actual boat rental situation. The results indicated that two types of designs were most likely to communicate the capacity information. The characteristics of these two designs were recommended as guidelines for the development of production capacity plate labels. (Author)
