This investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen stiffness on the relationship between elastic and plastic strain, rutting potential, and resilient modulus and Poisson's ratio of heavy clay. Specimens were compacted to various California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values and subjected to either 1,000 or 50,000 repetitive stress applications in a triaxial compression chamber. The plastic and recoverable strains were monitored from which the rutting potential and resilient modulus could be determined. CBR and unconfined compression strength (USC) tests were conducted for supplemental information. The relationship between elastic and plastic strain is dependent upon specimen stiffness. Poisson's ratio was found to be insensitive to number and magnitude of repetitive stress applications, confining pressure, and specimen stiffness.
