Sizing of Containment Areas for Dredged Material.

A rational method to size dredged material containment areas and guidelines for selecting the parameters required by the method are presented. The technique aims at improving the bulking factor sizing method presently in use and takes into account (a) the properties of the channel sediment to be dredged, (b) the behavior of the dredged material in the disposal site, and (c) the components of the dredging operation that affect volume of sediment dredged. For these purposes, current practice was surveyed, pertinent values of the dredging operation were reviewed, the behavior of several types of dredged material was investigated, and the prediction methodology was applied to four field cases.
