Dr. Sanford C. Barnum, New York City (1835-1885) introduced the rubber dam concept to dentistry in June 1864. This article relates to the historical events which led up to this discovery and portrays the development of this 'newfangled' invention which ultimately revolutionized operative dentistry. In spite of early opposition, by 1867 the use of rubber dam became widespread at home and abroad. Dr. Barnum received many honors and testimonials for his discovery but during the last two years of his life, a jealous rival claimed priority of invention. Eventually, however, the profession stood by Dr. Barnum recognizing him as the true discoverer. He died at age 47 suffering from a chronic, painful condition. Dentistry will ever be grateful to Dr. Barnum for this invention which was freely given to the profession. (Author)
