Investigations Concerning Aerosol Immunization of Swine Against Diamond Disease.

As a result of the author's experiments, he concludes that: (1) Aerosol immunization of swine against diamond disease by the use of live attenuated cultures of the A70 and VR2 strain under experimental conditions appears to be a safe procedure both for young swine (approximately 35 kg) as well as older (approximately 70 kg); (2) A special resistance is gained, fully protecting 37 of 39 immunized swine from exposure to a powerful intradermal infection carried out 21, 40, and 108 days after immunization; (3) In determining the degree of immunity, the method of artificial infection (the challenge method) seems more conclusive than examining the sera by the growth-test method; and (4) A better explanation of the causes of the obvious discrepancies between results obtained by the growth-test and artificial intradermal infection (challenge) methods appears advisable for both purely scientific reasons as well as possible practical application.
