Areal Coverage of New England Rainfall Cumulations in 1 Hour to 4 Days.

A stochastic model of the areal extent of weather events, after several effective applications, has been examined further, to involve both temporal and spatial coverage. With the hourly precipitation data of the National Weather Service, the horizontal extent of 1-hour patterns, then 3-hour and 12-hour patterns were examined. More recently, 24-, 48- and 96-hour rainfall were totalled for each of many stations. The overall result was the expected increase in the persistence of areal coverage, up to 24 hours. But unexpectedly the persistence decreased in the 2- and 4-day patterns. (Author)
